The Most Civilised Journey in European Travel
There is a school of thought — well-founded, in our experience — that the journey should be part of the trip. Eurostar, which connects Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam to London St Pancras in two to two-and-a-half hours, exemplifies this principle. You board in the heart of a European capital, sit at a proper table, order breakfast, and emerge at one of London's finest Victorian railway terminals having barely noticed the English Channel passing beneath you.
From St Pancras, a short Tube ride across to London Euston connects you directly to Avanti West Coast services to Chester — departing regularly, arriving in approximately two hours. At Chester, a twelve-minute onward train on the Transport for Wales Wrexham line delivers you to Wrexham General. The entire journey, door to door from central Paris, takes between five and six hours. It is almost certainly faster — and incomparably more pleasant — than flying.
"The train is the correct way to travel between European cities. It is the only mode of transport that places you in the city when you arrive rather than twenty miles outside it."

The journey from any Eurostar city to Chester and Wrexham is a three-leg affair, each leg straightforward and well-connected. Here is the full picture:
The headline leg. Sit back in the main cabin or upgrade to Standard Premier for flexible dining. Paris takes 2hrs 16min; Brussels 1hr 56min; Amsterdam 3hrs 52min. Arrive at London St Pancras International — one of the world's great railway stations.
St Pancras and Euston are neighbours — a single stop on the Northern or Victoria line, or an easy ten-minute walk. No luggage restrictions, no queues to speak of. You can buy a train ticket to Chester from the Avanti machine at Euston if you haven't pre-booked.
Direct trains from Euston to Chester depart regularly throughout the day on Avanti West Coast. The journey takes approximately 2 hours, with Chester being a mainline stop on the West Coast Main Line. The train is comfortable, fast, and has a trolley service.
The final leg. Chester and Wrexham are connected by approximately 52 trains per day — running approximately every 12–15 minutes throughout the day. The journey takes 12 minutes. Single fare costs from £3.80. Wrexham General station puts you a ten-minute walk from the city centre and STōK Cae Ras.

Tips for the Perfect Journey
The optimal Paris departure is the 08:31 Eurostar, arriving St Pancras at 09:47. A straightforward transfer to Euston puts you on a late-morning Avanti to Chester, arriving before 1pm — a full afternoon and evening in the city. The same timing works from Brussels on the 08:50 service.
For Amsterdam travellers, the 06:17 morning Eurostar connects cleanly with a Chester arrival around 1pm. Alternatively, a London stopover the night before is an elegant solution — St Pancras is the perfect hotel neighbourhood.
Eurostar allows two pieces of luggage up to 85cm per passenger, plus one piece of hand luggage. Unlike flying, there are no weight limits for carry-on. You walk onto the train with your bags — no overhead locker scramble, no carousel wait at the other end. Oversized luggage (ski equipment, bikes) must be registered in advance.
UK/EU passport holders complete border checks before boarding at Paris, Brussels or Amsterdam — not on arrival in London. The process is straightforward and typically takes 20–30 minutes. Non-EU visitors should check current UK entry requirements and ensure any required visas are in place before travel.
Eurostar prices work like airlines — the earlier you book, the lower the fare. Standard seats from Paris to London start at £39 one way and rise significantly as the departure approaches. The cheapest fares are typically available 4–6 months in advance. For flexible travel, Standard Premier's exchange policy is worth the premium over a non-refundable Standard fare.
Arriving in Chester
Chester railway station is a short walk or taxi from the city walls, the Rows and the Cathedral. From the station, the heart of the city is ten minutes on foot. Most hotels are within a fifteen-minute walk of the station — including The Chester Grosvenor on Eastgate Street, which is a five-minute stroll through the Roman gate.
For Wrexham-bound visitors, the Transport for Wales platform at Chester is well-signed. The 12-minute journey runs on the Wrexham & Borders line, terminating at Wrexham General — a ten-minute walk from the city centre, STōK Cae Ras and the Turf Hotel. One Avanti West Coast service per day also runs direct from London Euston to Wrexham General, bypassing Chester entirely — check the current timetable.
Chester station: Taxis outside the main entrance. The Rows and city centre — 10 min walk. The Chester Grosvenor — 8 min walk. Chester Cathedral — 10 min walk.
Wrexham General: STōK Cae Ras — 8 min walk. City centre — 10 min walk. The Turf Hotel — 9 min walk. The Fat Boar (Hope Street) — 12 min walk.

The Environmental Case
The choice between Eurostar and a short-haul flight is not a close contest on environmental grounds. A return Eurostar journey from Paris to London produces approximately 6kg of CO₂ per passenger. The equivalent flight produces approximately 68kg — more than ten times as much. For those travelling from Amsterdam or Brussels, the differential is even more striking given the flight would be among the shortest hauls in European aviation.
Eurostar trains also run on electricity and have been progressively increasing the proportion sourced from renewable energy. For the environmentally-minded visitor, the train is not a compromise on comfort or convenience — it is simply the better choice in every measurable respect.
